Plot
The narrative opens in New York City early in the 1880s. The city is growing, and the upper crust of the nation’s industrialists are making their fortunes from railroads, industry, banking and trade.
The mansion of George and Bertha Russell, a new building, is opposite the distinguished van Rhijn family. The Russell family symbolizes the new rich among the American population who made huge sums of money in recent years. Despite their money they also have a hard time winning acceptance from New York’s old money elite.
Bertha Russell is determined that she will make her way in the man’s main social circles. Other older families, however, consider the Russells to be outsiders, whose money has no history and is not socially accepted, as is Agnes van Rhijn.
The series also chronicles the story of Marian Brook, a young woman who relocates to New York after her father’s death. The film allows the viewer to experience the social world of the period through Marian’s experiences. The show highlights the dramatic changes in American society, and delves into aspects of romance, business rivalry, political influence, family disputes, and social ambitions.
