Running Point (TV Series) Plot

Running Point is about Isla Gordon, a former party girl and college drop-out, who suddenly finds herself as the president of the Los Angeles Waves professional basketball team when her older brother Cam decides to step down, because of his drug addiction and drug rehabilitation. Because Isla grew up around the game, her father and brothers hardly took her seriously, so she developed a rebellious lifestyle at an early age. Once handed the reins, however, she believes she has the chance to prove herself to be able to operate one of the largest basketball operations in the league.

As president of the Waves, Isla quickly finds out that managing a pro basketball team takes more than just a knowledge of sports. She has to deal with hard to handle athletes, controversy in the media, negotiations with sponsors, boardroom politics, financial difficulties and family drama. All the while, she must try to keep her brothers and sisters, Sandy and Ness, from arguing with her and trying to take over. The human aspect of the show is one of its most important aspects, and that of the Gordon family is no exception, as old animosities and unrequited frustrations emerge.

The show’s other major section features the players and staff of the Waves organization. The constant Controversy regarding the infamous Travis Bugg and the trouble he has had as a point guard and the adaptation of young Dyson Gibbs to Professional Basketball. Emotional scenes and comedic mishaps abound along the way between coaches, executives and players. As well as sports, the show also covers relationships, self-development, overcoming addictions, and friendships at work. The blend of humor, athletic drama, and emotion distinguishes Running Point from contemporary comedy shows.

Running Point Production Details

running point netflix

Running Point is a visually vibrant and contemporary presentation of sports entertainment and workplace humor. Mindy Kaling, along with Ike Barinholtz, Elaine Ko, and David Stassen, is the developer of the series. The production companies include Kaling International, Warner Bros. Television Studios and 3 Arts Entertainment. The designers wanted to create a fictional basketball universe that is believable and yet funny.

The series is currently shooting in LA from February 2024. The story takes place around the Los Angeles Waves team, but the scenes of the team’s arena were shot at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland. The production team utilized a large basketball arena, locker rooms, executive offices and practice facilities to give a realistic professional basketball setting.

Perhaps the show’s notability was also due to the fact that it featured celebrity guest appearances and sports industry mentions. Actor Macaulay Culkin visited the set while filming, and later made a cameo appearance on the show. The production was embroiled in a legal battle after Pepperdine University filed a lawsuit against Netflix and Warner Bros. for allegedly using the same name for its sports team, Waves, and Pepperdine’s own sports team.
